Tarek I. Hassanein, MD, is Professor of Clinical Medicine and Surgery, as
well as Chief of Clinical Hepatology at the University of California at San
Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine in San Diego, California. He also serves
as Medical Director for the UCSD Liver Transplantation Program and is Director
of the UCSD Liver Center. Dr. Hassanein is board certified in Gastroenterology
and Internal Medicine.
Dr. Hassanein received his undergraduate degree and his medical degree at
Alexandria University in Alexandria, Egypt. He completed his internship and
Internal Medicine residency at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.
He performed his Research and Clinical GI/Hepatology fellowship at the University
of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. He is a fellow of the American College of
Physicians and the American College of Gastroenterology.
Dr. Hassanein is a member of several societies, including the American Gastroenterology
Association, American Society of Transplant Physicians, American College
of Physicians, and the International Liver Transplantation Society. He is
on the Editorial Board for Liver Transplantation and Digestive
Diseases and Science, is a Regional Editor for Hepato-Gastroenterology, and serves as
a reviewer for such medical journals as Journal of Hepatology, Cancer
Investigation, Journal of Medical Virology, and Oncology. He has also served on various
committees, such as the International Committee for the American Association
for the Study of Liver Disease and the American College of Gastroenterology.
Dr. Hassanein has written numerous abstracts, articles, and book chapters
on chronic hepatitis and liver disease.
