CLINICAL INFORMATION

HISTORY OF PRESENT ILLNESS

A 48-year-old African American man with a history of intravenous drug use, HIV infection since 1997, and chronic hepatitis C (HCV) genotype 1a since June 1999, was referred to the hepatology clinic by his infectious disease specialist. At the time of his visit, his HIV viral load was 139 copies/mL, his CD4+ count was 667 cells/µL, and his HCV RNA was 574,942 IU/mL. The patient had been previously treated for HCV with peginterferon α-2b and ribavirin, completing a 48-week course of therapy in August 2002 without achieving a sustained virologic response. At the time of this visit, the patient reported mild right upper quadrant abdominal discomfort.
